Recommendations

Valid Passport or National ID

Ensure your passport or national ID card is valid for the duration of your stay in Switzerland.

Residence Permit

If you plan to stay in Switzerland for more than three months, you must apply for a residence permit from the cantonal migration office in the canton where you will live. Different types of permits are available depending on your employment situation:

  • Permit L: Short-term residence permit for up to one year.
  • Permit B: Initial residence permit for five years.
  • Permit C: Permanent residence permit, granted after five or ten years of residence.

Health Insurance

You must have health insurance coverage in Switzerland. Health insurance is mandatory, and you must take out a Swiss health insurance policy within three months of arriving.

Employment

As an EU citizen, you do not need a work permit to work in Switzerland, but you must obtain a residence permit. Employers may ask for proof of identity and your residence permit.

Housing

Arrange accommodation before or soon after your arrival. The housing market can be competitive, particularly in larger cities like Zurich, Geneva, and Basel, so it's advisable to start looking early.

Bank Account

Opening a Swiss bank account is recommended for salary payments and everyday transactions. You will need a valid ID, proof of address, and sometimes proof of employment to open an account.

Language

Switzerland has four official languages: German, French, Italian, and Romansh. Proficiency in the relevant language can be highly beneficial for daily life, integration, and job opportunities.
